Washington State Library's collection of Martin Baker's photograph album of World War I photographs, 1917-1918.

This collection consists of 64 black & white photographs that were taken by Martin Baker while he was stationed in Alaska during World War I. There is a photograph of Baker in the cover pocket of the album. The photographs are 17 cm. x 28 cm. with the image being about 9 cm. x 13 cm. Most of the photos are of cities in Alaska such as Juneau, Douglas, Skagway, Mt. Whitcom, Sitka & Yakutat. The photos include a photo of the U.S.S.C. 309; of the Governor of Alaska; some of Baker's shipmates; and a few locals of the area.

Martin Baker was born about 1886 in Lille Hammer, Norway. He came to the United States in 1903. After working for a telephone company and railroad in St. Paul, MN, he moved to Seattle, WA in 1909 to work for a commercial photographer. He served in the U.S. Navy during World War I. Baker became a pioneer in medical photography when he became Seattle's first medical photographer when he joined the staff of the King County Hospital (now Harborview) in 1931. Maud P. Mitchell was born about 1883 in Oregon. She married Chas. R. Mitchell and by 1920 they were living in Chehalis, WA. Charles was an assistant cashier at the bank.
